 BURLINGTON  The Vermont Department of Health and a network of 29 community coalitions are
embarking on a coordinated statewide effort to combat underage drinking with todays launch of the
ParentUp campaign. The first phase of the campaign is designed for parents of Vermont middle school
students ages 11 to 13, with a second phase for parents of older teens beginning in April.  While
the rate of youth alcohol use has declined significantly in the last decade, 36 percent of Vermont
students still report they drank alcohol at least once in the last 30 days. Approximately one out of
five middle school students try alcohol before the age of 13.  The primary goal of this first
phase of the campaign is to encourage parents of middle school students to talk to their children
about drinking, and to provide parents with information about community resources available to
support them, said Barbara Cimaglio, deputy commissioner, Division of Alcohol & Drug Abuse
Programs. But it is every bit as important that we get parents talking to each other and help to
create an environment that supports and perpetuates that dialogue. Parents can play a significant
role in changing the statistics on underage drinking. Studies show that parents have the most
influence on whether or not their child will drink. This campaign is designed for parents of middle
school children because younger students are much more likely to talk to parents about problems they
are having with alcohol. According to the 2009 Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 32 percent of 8th
graders and 29 percent of 9th graders would talk to a parent, compared to 22 percent of 10th, 11th,
or 12th graders.  The ParentUpVT.org website and other campaign materials illustrate simple, proven
steps parents can take with their children to help reduce underage drinking. The second phase,
launching in mid-April, will encourage parents of high school students to refuse to give alcohol to
minors or host underage drinking parties, and is intended to increase awareness about community
resources and support. We want to be sure that parents feel ready and able to have these
important conversations at the time when they are needed most, said Cimaglio. Each community has
its own unique makeup and circumstances. The campaign is designed to support community coalitions
with appropriate tools to create the right localized approach with ParentUpVT.org acting as a
clearinghouse for information and resources. This grassroots campaign is supported by radio, print

**Course Registration - Students who have not yet registered for classes next year need to do so

one. You must bring your yellow registration for with you with all signatures including a parent.

 Local Scholarship Applications will be available on Monday, March 22, 2010 and must be returned to
the Guidance Office by Thursday, April 29, 2010. 

Students interested in the Governor's Institutes of Vermont - Just a reminder that March 15 is the
deadline for students tohand in their applications to the Guidance Office. Students may
sendtheir scholarship applications directly to GIV by April 1 or with their applications.

Due to a time conflict with SAT testing on March 13th, the time Congressman Hodes Academy Day
has been moved to 2pm to 4:30pm, at the National Guard base at 1 Minuteman Way in Concord. Contact

Parents and Students Grade 9 - 11 - Students will receive course registration materials for
2010-11 in Common Ground on Thursday, Feb. 4. Registration for all HHS students grade 9 - 11 will
be scheduled the first week in March. 

Juniors - NCAA Registration (only if you plan to play NCAA sports in college).
 
Now is the time for college-bound student-athletes in the junior class to register with the NCAA
Eligibility Center if they plan on participating in college athletics. Early registration promotes
positive planning and involvement, bypasses the last-minute rush and helps college-bound
student-athletes avoid issues that may delay their academic and amateur certifications. The
registration process is easy and can be done by:             1. Logging on
to the Eligibility Center's new Web site at www.eligibilitycenter.org;   2.
Selecting the Fall 2010 or After icon;   3. Selecting the New
Account tab at the top of the screen; and   4. Beginning the registration
process.                 Applying to College     College-bound student-athletes need to apply to
the college or university they are interested in attending. Some student-athletes think that
because they are being recruited or because they have registered with the Eligibility Center, they
do not need to apply for admission. Eligibility and admission to a college or university are two
separate processes and both need to be completed.

 Congratulations to the boys & girls Nordic Ski teams for their State Championship awards. 
Hanover Debate Team won many honors at the Vermont State Championship Debate Tournament.  HHS
students won Best Speaker In The State, 4th Place Speaker In The State, State Tournament
Championship Finalists, the 2nd Place Overall Team and the 1st Place State Championship Novice
Team.

have been selected to participate in the AVA Gallery and Art Center Second Annual Best of the Upper
Valley High School Invitational Art Show. Some Hanover students have received recognition for the
excellence of their artwork. The Opening Reception and Award Ceremony is tonight, February 12,
5-7PM. The exhibit will be up at AVA through March 5. Please come see some fabulous art created by
Hanover High School students and students from other area high schools.

U.S. News and World Report has selected Hanover High School as one of the best schools in the
United States. Hanover High School is a Silver Medal winner and has been recognized by U.S News

  Greta Mills, an HHS math teacher, is a finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in
Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) from the State of New Hampshire. The PAEMST program
identifies outstanding mathematics and science teachers who qualify to serve as models for their
colleagues. Greta was one of two math teachers recognized in New Hampshire. Her candidacy will
be moved to the national level. Hanover High School is proud to have two previous PAEMST winners,
Jeanine King and Kevin Lavigne.

Congratulations to our Chemistry and Physics Problem Solving (CAPPS) students who competed in the
UVM TASC (Technology and Science Connection) contest. Each year the students are given a design
challenge by TASC. This year the challenge was particularly difficult. The students had to build
a machine(s) that moved as many apples as possible from the trees in the Orchard to the Market Apple
Bin in three five-minute runs. Power for the machine was derived from wind blown by no more
than two standard window box fans. Many competitors were not able to bring a working machine.
None of our four machines were working days before the competition, but Mr. Lavigne and the students
worked nights and weekends to bring four working machines to the competition.

2nd place in the IEEE Design Profit Score Award
2nd place in the Pizzagalli Performance Bushels Delivered Award

NEW HHS STUDENT PARKING POLICY

All designated student spaces will be distributed in the following order of priority:
1. Hardship Students, 2. Tuition Students, 3. Seniors

Hardship parking is defined as a situation that is out of the control of the student. This
burden would require a student to drive their vehicle to school in order to attend their classes on
a daily basis. The following circumstances DO NOT apply for Hardship:
  -Extra curricular activities before or after school
  -Sports 
  -Carpooling
  -In-district students who have access to a bus route 

Hardship applicants should come with a letter from their family, signed by themselves and their
guardians stating their hardship. Acceptance of Hardship situations is at the discretion of the Dean
of Students. 

Hardship student parkers will park in the spaces behind the school, along the track fence, and
are within the student permit parking signs. NO OTHER PARKING SPACES ARE PERMITTED. 

If you receive a Hardship parking permit, you will have it for the entire academic school year
unless your Hardship situation changes. 

All senior tuition (e.g. Lyme, Hartland, etc) students who plan to drive to school will need
to fill out an application. There are 15 spaces available for tuition parkers on HOVEY LANE. NO
OTHER PARKING SPACES ARE PERMITTED. If more than 15 students apply, the names will be chosen from a
lottery. Seniors will have priority; juniors may apply if the senior spaces do not fill. 

If you receive a tuition permit, you will have it for the entire academic school year. 

All non tuition (e.g: Norwich, Hanover residents) seniors who plan to drive to school will
need to fill out an application. The senior parking spaces are located behind the high school, along
the track fence, and are within the student permit parking signs. NO OTHER PARKING SPACES ARE
PERMITTED. 

All available senior spaces will be chosen in a lottery two times a year. For the rest of the
09-10 school year, you may apply now (November) and again in March. If you apply and DO NOT receive
a permit, you may apply again the second time. No more than one semester of parking per permit will
be given for seniors. 

WE WILL NO LONGER BE TICKETING. ILLEGALLY PARKED VEHICLES MAY BE TOWED AT OWNERS EXPENSE. 


Applications will be available November 16th and need to be returned by November 23rd.

information about possible parties or under-age gatherings where alcohol or drugs may be present.

HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL PORTAL INFORMATION  1-22-10HHS is making the Student Portal available to
parents and students this semester. The portal is a way for students and parents to see a snapshot
of student grades.  Here's the information about the Student Portal. Philosophy

responsible for their own education. The Plan February 5th  Students will receive a letter
containing a user name, the password, and instructions at the same time they receive their second
quarter report cards.  Students will receive training on the use of the portal from their Common
Ground advisers and parents will have access to an instructional video via the HHS website. February
11th  HHS will hold a Family Night for parents and students who would like to hear more about how
we envision the portal working and who have questions about accessing and using the portal. A Few
Details Parents receiving progress reports through SPED, 504, Dresden and Guidance will now check
their child's progress using the portal. Advisers from those programs either have or will be in
touch with you. Once the passwords have been given out, parents who need help accessing the portal
or want the password mailed to them will contact Tammie Patten at
portal.info@hanovernorwichschools.org Teachers will update their grades every two weeks. Grades will
be recorded in a way that best reflects the program for each class.We are excited about the
opportunities for increased communication and understanding that this new technology will provide.
However, please be aware that the grades on the portal are only a snapshot of a student's current
grades. There may be factors such as category weighting and participation which may affect the
final grade calculation at the end of each grading period. In the event of questions, we continue
to encourage students to contact their teachers directly to resolve conflicts.

 
 Previous Weekly Email Portal Information
  What is the PowerSchool portal?
When teachers use the online PowerSchool grade book program to record their grades, there is the
potential for a student, school professionals supporting that student and that students parents
to use the portal to view the students grades during the quarter.  

Our teachers are either currently using the PowerSchool grade book or learning to use it.

Support Professionals such as learning specialists, the 504 teacher, guidance counselors, and
Dresden Plan advisors are using PowerTeacher grade book to view grades when they meet with students.

Almost one third of our students currently receive periodic progress notices. The portal will be
an excellent alternative to progress notices.

The portal will allow students to check their grades on a regular basis and students who have used
it report that it is a very useful tool.

 Hi! I would like to use this forum each week to share a bit about what's happening in the
science realm at HHS. Check out what your young scientists are up to!

Students in Environmental Science are studying how nature can be used to treat sewage and comparing
that process to a conventional wastewater treatment plant in Hanover. A recent field trip to the
rest stop on I-89 in Sharon Vt. which houses a living machine to treat its wastewater, and the
Hanover plant allowed students to compare and contrast these different technologies. Check out the
picture of the plants living on human wastewater from Rt 89!

The 2010 Senior Class Party Parent Steering Committee is meeting on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 7 pm
in the high school library. This meeting is the third meeting of the steering committee and will
include updates from the party committee chairs. We are in great need of more volunteers for this
year's party to be a success. Specifically we are still looking for individuals who are willing to
help lend a hand by chairing the Fundraising Committee, assist as General Volunteer Coordinator or
help Co-chair the Parent Steering Committee for the 2010 Senior Class All Night Party.

2-2-10 Baccalaureate Service InformationAs graduation approaches, we mark a turning point in the
lives of seniors and their parents. In celebration, a committee of parents is organizing the annual
Interfaith Chapel service at Rollins Chapel on Sunday, June 13 at 4:00 pm. In years past, this has
been a highlight of graduation week.Seniors and their parents are invited to help plan and
participate in this event. People of all faiths, with or without formal religious affiliation, are
welcome. Individuals or groups may provide music, poetry, dance, prayers, sacred texts, short
personal reflections or dramatic readings, as we give thanks for our many blessings and prepare to
move on. Please join us in making this happen!
There will be a brief meeting for interested seniors and parents on Thursday, February 25 in the

2010 All Night Graduation Party Planning meeting: All parents of seniors welcome to attend on
Monday, Feb. 8 @ 7 pm in the Hanover High School Library. Agenda: Identify next steps for
launching the 2010 All Night Graduation Party. This event depends on parent volunteers. Find out
more about the party and what you can do to lend a helping hand. All welcome. There is a job that
matches your interests, time and talents. Attend and learn what you can do to help make this

  2010 SENIOR CLASS PARTY COMMITTEESJob Descriptions Casino  Works closely with  the
Entertainment Committee to create an operating Casino where students  can win chips and exchange
them for prizes. (Note: no prior experience  required, training provided.) Decorate the casino 
space if not done by Decorating Committee.  Conduct casino activities  in conjunction with the
schedule established by the Entertainment Committee.  Chaperone   Recruit and schedule  parents for
blocks of time throughout the party to greet and chaperone  students. (Suggest 3 shifts, 15
chaperones per shift.) Help coordinate  party safety & security, i.e. provide chaperone ID nametags
and  placement of chaperones to support student safety and building security. Provide chaperones 
with list of expectations for student behavior at party and chaperones  responsibilities.  Clean
up   Coordinate with the HHS custodial staff  so the clean-up job is completed responsibly and on
time before the  start of the next school day. Provide cleaning  materials and supplies.  Pack away
all non-disposable  items and finding a place to store Party decorations, etc. until they  are
needed next year. Set up a system  to return borrowed items. Recruit parents  of juniors onto this
committee so that there is an experienced liaison  for next years party. Work closely with Junior
Parent and General  Volunteer coordinators.  Decorating   Design, create,  and set up all
decorations, including any signs needed for the night  of the party.  Coordinate with  the
Entertainment, Casino, and Food Committees regarding the placement  of activities/food and to
make/place the signage needed for the party. Work with the Junior  Parent Coordinator to obtain
volunteer Junior parents who will be available  to help set up the decorations so that Senior
parents can attend graduation.  Secure volunteers  from Junior Parent and General Volunteer
coordinators  Coordinate with  Clean Up Committee to have Junior parents on hand at clean up to help
 collect, inventory and store decorations for their party next year.   Entertainment   Plan and
provide  entertainment throughout the evening. Includes contacting vendors and  volunteers for
entertainment services/equipment. Create or help create  a written schedule of the events for the
evening to be handed out to  students at party.  Schedule volunteers  to monitor all activities. 
Collaborate with  Junior Parent and General Volunteer coordinators to secure volunteers. Arrange for
the  delivery and return of rented or borrowed equipment. Coordinate entertainment  plan with
Decorating, Food and Casino committees.  Food   Solicit volunteers  and businesses to provide and/or
serve a variety of foods and beverages  throughout the evening.  Coordinate with  HHS, vendors,
and the Decorating Committee for delivery and storage.  Coordinate with  Clean up Committee to make
arrangements for disposition of any food  that will not be thrown away.  Coordinate with 
Fundraising-Raffle and T-Shirt Committees so that same businesses are  not solicited for multiple
gifts.  Fundraising   Coordinate with  Treasurer and committee chairs to raise funds sufficient to
cover the  expenses of the party.  Coordinate with  Party chairs to craft request for financial
support sent to senior parents.  Solicit businesses  and volunteers for donations to be used as
raffle prizes.  Schedule prize drawings  throughout the evening in coordination with the
Entertainment Committee.   T Shirts  Coordinate T-shirt  design with the party theme.  Contact TK
Sports  by mid-March, to ensure timely delivery of shirts. The order must be  placed no later than 4
weeks before the party date. Make sure a  sizing request is included on the initial party form so
each attendee  has a size that is a custom fit.  
 Junior Parent Volunteer Coordinator  Recruit parents  of junior students to help out with all
aspects of the party.  Assign junior  parents to be on the Decorating Committee. This is critical so
that  the decorating can continue when parents of seniors leave to attend  graduation.  Communicate 
to each volunteer the primary duties of the committee to which they  are assigned.  Help recruit 
and identify parents of juniors who are interested in chairing a committee  for next years party.
  Treasurer  Manages finances  for the party keeping an accurate written record for accounting
purposes.  Helpful to have previous accounting experience or precious experience  as a treasure. 
Works closely  with the Hanover High School main office personnel so that payment/reimbursements 
for party expenditures can be made.  Assists committee  chairs in developing a responsible budget. 
Updates the  chairs and committee members on a regular basis through written reports  and attendance
at all committee CHAIR meetings. Acts as a point  person for collecting funds, keeping the books
current to provide an  ongoing record of donors and the amount donated. The Treasurer holds  all

SENIORS:Your class trip is going to be in BURLINGTON! We need your money for the class trip so we
can get buses and pay for the dinner cruise. The total cost of the trip will be $100. Please bring
the first half of your money (cash or check to HHS) to Miss Murray or Mr. Hermanson by Friday,
January 29th. The remainder of your money will be due on Friday March 12th. It is important that
this money comes in on time so we can make payments on time as well!

To all parents of Hanover High Schools 2010 graduating class,

You are invited to attend the first parent meeting where you can learn more about this years
2010 All Night Graduation Party. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25, at 7 pm in the high
school library. 

This year marks the 27 th year for this annual substance free graduation celebration. Student
attendance at the all night party each year averages between 96-98 % of the graduating class. 

The entire event is planned by parents of seniors and requires many volunteer helping hands to be
successful. Each year the theme for the party is chosen by parents and kept a closely guarded secret
so that seniors will be totally surprised as they cross the threshold into the magical evening.
Throughout the night there is plenty of food, activities and entertainment. The goal is to give our
graduates a night filled with fun and fellowship that is substance free. There are many ways for
parents to help. 

To learn more about the party and what you can do to help make it happen this year, attend the 2010
All Night Senior Class Parent meeting on Monday, Jan. 25 th. If you cannot attend please email me

help make this years party a grand success.

Next week is March Intensive. 9th grade students are reminded that they do not have Open Campus
during March Intensive and all students are reminded that normal school hours and all school rules
apply.


Video Gaming for Teens at Howe Library
 
 Come to the library to play a variety of games! Well have two Sony PlayStations as well as a
Nintendo Wii and two Nintendo DS Lites. 
 
 Fill out our survey on the Teen Page and tell us what youd like to play. Well provide some
snacks, too.

 My brother was always the one outside working with Dad. He would get the car ready for a long
trip by changing the oil. I would be inside reading. He would help stain the deck to protect it
from the elements. I was in the hammock reading. He would take apart the faucet to see why it
was dripping. I was ..well you get the picture. 
 Fast forward twenty years. I own a house and car, and when things break or drip, I hire an
expensive specialist to fix the problem. Maybe I should have been forced to help my dad and learn
some practical skills. Maybe I should take a class now on auto maintenance at the local community
college. I know now that I would have benefited from taking a high school class in the practical
arts. Yes, I enjoyed taking chorus for 4 years. But perhaps I would also have had the release
from mental heavy lifting in my academic classes with a tech ed course as well. 
 Some of our students may agree with one tech ed teacher that in schools, we create artificial
learning environments for our children that they know to be contrived and undeserving of their full
attention and engagement. Without the opportunity to learn through the hands, the world remains
abstract and distant, and the passions for learning will not be engaged. As our engineering
design students will attest, an idea may be great on paper, but getting it to function is another
story, filled with trial and error. 
 A recent article in the New York Times listed practical jobs as more secure than ones centered
around cubicles. Computer work can be outsourced to other countries, but you can't hammer a nail
over the phone. (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/magazine/24labor-t.html) Who knows what
interests may be sparked?
 Have a conversation with your student over February break. See if there is room for a tech
ed class in their schedules. Read the course descriptions in the program of studies. Although
HHS students are eligible to attend Hartford's Vocational Technology program, there are many
students with interests in technical education who don't want to commit a large part of their day to
the Hartford program. We offer a wide variety of courses and encourage students to get their hands
on some science and technology down in the shop area. The tech ed courses are open to all grade
levels and some satisfy credit requirements in the practical/fine arts area.

 Here is a listing of courses in the tech ed area where students can work with their hands and
develop some practical skills: Engineering Design, Architectural Drafting, Woodworking, The Way
Things Work, Metals, Personal Auto Maintenance, and Electronics. Also our CAPPS course for seniors
offers good hands-on skills. 
 Come down and take a look around! The steps are found in the back of the atrium to the
right.
