FC to Google: Contacts and Calendars

Contacts

PLEASE NOTE: This will transfer individual contacts (e.g. "Mom" -> someaddress@wherever.com). This process will NOT transfer contact lists. But this screencast will show you how to transfer lists using this tool. NOTE: John Donnelly writes: "One interesting thing I've found when importing groups from FC: it doesn't seem to work for me first try, but if I repeat the steps again, it works."

1. Open the Contacts folder in FirstClass (might be called Address Book).
2. Select all contacts.
3. Under the "File" Menu, select "Export".
4. In the window that appears, choose "Selected contacts" and "For use with Outlook (.csv).
5. Click "OK".
6. Rename the exported file (i.e. MyContacts.csv). Leave the file extension intact.
7. Click "Save".
8. Login to new Google account.
9. On the left side of the inbox click on "Contacts".
10. In the top right corner of the "Contacts" list click Import.
11. Press the Browse button in the window that appears and find the file exported from FirstClass (i.e. Mycontacts.csv).
12. Press the "Import Contacts" button.
13. Click "Close".
14. In the "Contacts" Folder, at the top of the "Contacts" list, press "All Contacts" to see the newly added contacts.

If, after you do this, some contacts still won't auto-fill when you start to type, it may be that they (for some unknown FirstClass reason) didn't actually come in with their email addresses intact. There doesn't seem to be a pattern, just a handful fail sometimes. The answer is to go to your Gmail Contacts, scroll through, and Edit the ones whose email addresses are missing (and add the address manually). (Thanks again to Jean for this tip!)

If a huge number of your addresses are broken like this, email Marion for help.

Calendars
1. Users will open their FirstClass Calendar.
2. Select a single event.
3. Under the "File" Menu, select "Export".
4. In the window that appears, choose "All events and tasks" and "For use with Outlook (.csv).
5. Click "OK".
6. Rename the exported file/s (i.e. MyEvents.csv). Leave the file extension intact.
7. Click "Save".
8. The user will login to their new Google account.
9. At the top of the page click on "Calendar".
10. To the left of their Calendar, click on "Add".
11. Select "Create a new calendar" from the menu that appears.
12. Give this new calendar a name (i.e. Work or Imported Events).
13. At the bottom of the page, click Create Calendar.
14. Again, click "Add" then select "Import Calendar".
15. Click "Browse" and find the file you exported from FirstClass (i.e. MyEvents.csv).
16. Choose which calendar these events will be added to (i.e. Work or Imported Events).
17. Click "Import".
18. Click on the name of one of the calendars on the left side of the screen to return to viewing calendars.
